Our First Grandson!

Landon James Lahn

Things have been SO CRAZY these past few days that I’ve totally been neglecting the blog and I forgot to document the arrival of our third grand-child (our FIRST grandson)!!!

On Thursday, March 7th at 9:46am, we welcomed Landon James Lahn into the family in Brantford, ON (8lb 6oz & 21.25″) after nearly 34 hours of labour for poor Jess! He is most certainly a wonderful blessing and joy to see God’s creation once again!

Proud Grandparents

On the following Sunday ALL the grandkids (and their parents, and Nancy and I) got together for their first meet and greet at Daniel and Jess’s home. The pictures are SO confusing, as babies were being passed around all day long šŸ™‚

Daniel and Jessica are doing amazing as parents now and Landon is growing beautifully over the last 10 days. We continue to pray for health and blessings on Landon, Jess and Daniel, and all our family as the days go by.

Reflections; Sadness and Joy

March 17th, 2019

I’m sitting at home today with an ear infection, not really being able to hear well out of my left ear, hoping that the drops and antibiotics are really doing their thing.

In the meantime I’m reading through ‘stuff’ on the Internet. I’m reading about:

  • 50 Muslims killed in New Zealand by a crazed guy as a backlash against immigration
  • 120 Christians killed in Nigeria by radical Muslim terrorist factions like Boko Harum
  • Unborn babies being killed by doctors around the world
  • Back-biting and put-downs in comments on all sides

I’m sad.

And I see pictures and posts from my family:

  • An amazing new grandson
  • Two beautiful grand-daughters
  • Four wonderful kids and their equally wonderful spouses
  • A fantastic wife who’s right now out helping a refugee family from Zimbabwe find an affordable apartment

I’m joyful.

Joyful and sad at the same time.

I pray that the good of this world will start to overcome the evil. I know in the end it certainly will, and evil will be crushed, but I pray for our kids and grandkids and their kids, that this world will see The Light – The Son of the Living God – and that mankind will finally get their heads screwed on right.

Two Grand-Daughters in One Week!

November 13th, 2018

Arya & Melody together for the first time.

What a whirlwind week it’s been as we welcomed our first two grand-kids into the world!

On Sunday, Nov 4th @ 9:14pm we welcomed Arya Grace Lahn into the family up in Barrie, ON (7lbs & 22″) and then 6 days later (Saturday, Nov 10th, 2018 @ 2:27pm) we welcomed Melody June Lahn into the family in Brantford, ON (7lbs 12 oz and 19.25ā€).  What a joy to see God’s handiwork in each of these perfect little bundles!

And it was quite the celebration when Arya made her first road-trip to go see her cousin, Melody, and we were able to let them meet for the first time in the hospital in Brantford on Nov 11th.

Coming up now on 9 days and 3 days respectively, both are doing amazingly well (Grandpa, on the other hand, is a wreck and having great problems concentrating at work)!

We have been SO blessed with these two grand-daughters, and can’t wait for our first grand-son to arrive in late-Feb / early March!

Again? You bet!! That makes THREE!

August 18th, 2018

Okay, so by now you know that mid-May we were surprised with the announcement that the wives of our two oldest boys were expecting within a month of each other.  And you know they always say things always come in threes?  Well, they’re right again!  Daniel and Jess are expecting their first child (our third grandchild) in early March 2019!!

Last weekend, our third son (Daniel) and his wife (Jessa) were at our house for a full family get together — kind of a post-June wedding / summer fling / excuse to eat Sunday.  I’d just had eye surgery the few days before, and we’d overdone it by going to the baseball game on Saturday, so we were both (my wife and I) quite tired.

After playing a few games, Daniel decided he had to show us a video that he and Jess were putting together to go on their Youtube channel and wanted to know if we wanted a preview.  Well, the video turned out to be them making a double-layer pizza, and was quite cute.  I won’t spoil the ending, but suffice it to say, it was a revealing video.

The video ended.  There was silence.  Nancy and I looked at each other in stunned amazement.  And then the shoe dropped.  Number Three was on the way!!!  Because we were so tired, and because the secret had already sneaked out to the other kids, the reaction wasn’t as loud and crazy as the previous reveal in May, but we are again over the moon with pride and excitement!!

This has been a busy year for Daniel and Jess.  Over the past year, Daniel has been working hard at a new job in Cambridge at Frito-Lay, Jess has been working and going to school, just yesterday (Aug 17th) they took possession of their first home in Brantford, and now they are expecting their first child!!  (As it turns out, they found out about the baby one day after buying the house, and at Bethany’s wedding in June, Jess was in fact pregnant, although even she didn’t know it yet!!)

So as of this posting, we are looking at baby girl “Bean” in 73 days (Oct 31), baby girl “Sprout” in 98 days (Nov 25), and baby something (unknown yet) “Blue” (short for “Blueberry”) in 195 days (March 2)!!

And you can bet the preparations for turning our home into a nursery are fully underway!

Baby Announcement Videos

May 15th, 2018

So, some of you have asked if there were any videos taken of the reaction to the big news.  Well, I’m sad to say that there were no videos of Jordan and Rachel’s announcement šŸ™ but there were two videos of Tim and Rachel’s šŸ™‚

Here now, for your viewing pleasure, are the videos.

** Warning — There is a LOT of screaming!!! **

Crazy Weekend – The Start of TWO Somethings

May 15th, 2018

By now this is old news (but still exciting), but I thought my post was too good to simply delete, so I’m publishing it here for history’s sake.

I *really* wanted to publish this on May 7th, however I wasn’t allowed to.  Read below to find out why!!

What a weekend it was (May 5/6)!  Confusing, crazy, and exciting all at once!  My head is still spinning.  Here’s a synopsis:

  • Friday (May 4th) started cloudy and foggy and went to sunny, and then went to Windy.  The wind was incredible and it knocked out power all over the province, including our home at around 5:15pm.
  • Woke up Saturday, and the power was still out, and Hydro One was telling us it would likely be until Sunday night, 11pm, before power would be restored.  Numerous trees and hydro poles were down in the area and crews were working furiously to restore things as quickly as they could.
  • As you know, Bethany is getting married in a few weeks, and a wedding shower had been arranged at the church for her connections there.  The only problem was, because we had no power, we have no electricity to the well pump, which means we had no way of getting ready (Bethany, Nancy, Ty and I) — showers, hair, etc.  This was ‘solved’ by going to a friend’s home in Stouffville (who had power) and showering etc., there on our way to the church.

Keep reading or you’ll be sorry…

  • In addition, we had decided to celebrate Mothers Day a week early, at our place, and all the kids were due to come home after the shower was over and stay overnight.  Cooking wouldn’t have been a problem (BBQ and gas/propane stove), but we couldn’t envision 10 people in the house with no way to flush. šŸ™‚  So after sending text messages to all the kids saying “I think we have to cancel”, our two oldest sons figured out we could move it to Barrie to Tim and Rachel’s home instead.  So that’s what we did — after the shower, came home and packed everything up and head north for a wonderful family time. (More on that below.)
  • Sunday we got up and headed to church — 6 of us — and celebrated our Lead Pastor’s 20th Anniversary at the church, went out the lunch (since we STILL had no power, and they were now saying it would be noon Monday before it would be restored) and then headed home.  When we got there, it was starting to rain, BUT the power was back on.

The shower was lovely!  Bethany’s bridesmaid, Moreen, and her family, put SO much work into it, and we had a great time.  The displaced Mother’s Day was a load of fun, and the celebration on Sunday at church was SO well done!  But it was such a crazy weekend.

“So why couldn’t you tell us this that weekend?” you ask?  Keep reading…

Mother’s Day.  A day to honour the ones who brought us into this world.  A day for family.  A day for fun together.

Well, as you’ve read, ours started off quite weirdly.  Having to pack up the food we’d prepared to cook at home was not on our original plan.  The wind storm made that necessary, and in fact we were quite ready to cancel/postpone, but with all the wedding plans upcoming we knew it would be hard to find another weekend when we could all get together.  Jordan insisted, and Tim and Rachel agreed, that we should just move the party to Barrie.  So that’s what we did.

After a great dinner of steak, chicken, shrimp, grilled veggies, roasted potatoes and a fancy grilled cheese (“Halloom” or “Halloumi”), Jordan announced that before dessert we were going to play a new game that he’d backed on Kickstarter that was to be released in November (but he had a pre-release copy).  He had cards that he was going to hand out that had character names on them.  Some were the bearers of a secret, other were trying to determine the secret, and others were trying to prevent you from finding out the secret.  He dealt them out and then told us to all look at our characters.

I looked at mine and it had my Dad’s name on it.  My thought was, “Cool!  A personalized game!  This should be fun.”  Nancy did the same, and thought, “Oh that’s nice.  It has Murray’s Mom’s name on it.  I wonder how this is going to play out?”

BUT… there was starting to be excitement from across the table where Bethany and Ty, and Daniel and Jessa were sitting.  It wasn’t until Bethany flipped her card onto the table and I saw that it read “Aunt Bethany” that my card wasn’t referring to my Dad, but it was referring to ME!  “Grandpa Lahn”!!

Seconds later (actually quite a few seconds later), Nancy came to the same realization.  “Grandma Lahn” was her.  There were screams and hugs and much merriment for the next little while.

It turned out, Jordan and Rachel are expecting a little sprout in late November.  The ‘game’ was going to be released on November 27th!!

“But you said TWO somethings!?!  What’s the 2nd thing?”  Keep reading…

After that excitement had died down it was time to open Mothers Day cards and gifts.

Now, at this point, I need to back up about 5 years or so to when we lived in our old house in Scarborough.  Jordan and Rachel had been over at our house and when they’d left one morning, Jordan had left a card on Nancy’s computer in the kitchen that was addressed… “To Grandma… That’s You!”  It was to be dropped off to Nancy’s Mom who was living (and still is) at Shepherd Village just a few blocks away, and Nancy was going to take it to her.  Tim came down, to go to school, I think, and saw this in Jordan’s writing and thought “OMG! Jordan’s left this on Mom’s computer as a way to tell her that they’re expecting!!!”, which of course turned out to be totally wrong, but made for a good story, and a great ongoing joke.

Flash forward again…

Nancy starts to open a card in a nice red envelope that reads “Happy Mother’s Day”.  When she opens it, it’s a custom card, and it has a cute picture of two cats holding hands with hearts and it reads “To Grandma. (That’s You!)”  We’ve been, of course, talking constantly about the wonderful news of Jordan and Rachel, and she’s thinking the card is from all of the kids (they often do a group gift or card) and they were all in on the news.  Alternatively it’s from Jordan and Rachel.

I’m still laughing with the rest about the previous news until I look up and see both Tim and Jordan with their phones videoing the card opening.  That’s when it hits me.

When Nancy opens the card, it reads “We’re buying a cat” (which was another inside joke from when Daniel and Jess thought we were being invited to Tim and Rachel’s so they could announce they were pregnant.  Instead they fooled them into believing that “we’re buying a cat” was a code word for “we’re pregnant”.  In fact they weren’t pregnant, nor were they buying a cat!)… and there’s a picture of an ultrasound.  Underneath it reads “Only the best parents get promoted to grandparents!”  Nancy’s still thinking that it’s from J & R, until she sees the last line… “Happy Mother’s Day.  Love, Tim, Rachel and Baby Lahn“.

Oh… My… Gosh… !… !… !… !… !

Turns out this card wasn’t from Jordan and Rachel, it was from Tim and Rachel, and they are expecting just less than 1 month before Jordan and Rachel (October 28th)!!

Screams galore!  My ears and hurting!  People are trying to climb over the table to hug!  Hilarious laughter all around!!

It turns out that neither Rachel knew about the other being pregnant (they both knew they were trying, but…)!  The surprisers were themselves surprised!!

So why couldn’t I tell this until now?  Because part each of the other sides of the family hadn’t been told yet, and won’t be told until the real Mother’s Day, and Jordan and Rachel wanted to wait until their 2nd ultrasound to be safe.

We’re expecting twins! (Well, not really, but close enough.)  If all goes well (and we’re praying daily for each of them), #1 (aka “Bean”) on Oct 28, and #2 (aka “Sprout”) on Nov 27.

<<< Bean <<<

>>> Sprout >>>

We’re all very excited, as you can imagine.  1 wedding, and 2 babies all in 1 year!

God is good!!!  So very, very, very, very good!!!

We’re Gonna Be Grandparents…. Again!!

May 14th, 2018

So, remember how a yesterday we announced that Tim and Rachel were expecting a baby on October 28th?  We’ve been holding it in even longer, but we found out the SAME DAY that Jordan and Rachel are expecting a baby on November 27th!!

That’s right!  We’re going to be grandparents twice within a month (if everyone’s on time)!!

We celebrated Mother’s Day a week early, and had to have it at Tim and Rachel’s in Barrie, as we didn’t have power that weekend.  After dinner, Jordan announced that before dessert we were going to play a new game that he’d backed on Kickstarter that was to be released in November (but he had a pre-release copy).  He had cards that he was going to hand out that had character names on them.  Some were the bearers of a secret, other were trying to determine the secret, and others were trying to prevent you from finding out the secret.  He dealt them out and then told us to all look at our characters.

(Tim and Rachel surprised us right after, but that’s a story for another post, that was supposed to be a prior post, that got split into two posts, but will get posted next, but that’s a LONG story.)

Anyway, we are overjoyed at the prospect of Jordan and Rachel’s news (and ecstatic we can finally talk about it!) and are praying that all will go well for them too!

God is SO, SO, SO, SO good indeed!!!

We’re Gonna Be Grandparents!

May 13th, 2018

After holding it in for over a week, and nearly exploding, we can finally tell you that we are going to be grandparents come October!!

That’s right!  We are overjoyed to announce that Tim and Rachel surprised us on Sunday, May 6th with this early Mother’s Day card…

For the backstory to this card I need to back up about 5 years or so to when we lived in our old house in Scarborough.

Well, this time it’s no joke!!!  The expected delivery date is October 28th, 2018

It will be their first child, and our first grandchild!

God is SO, SO good!!

Things I Learned from Leading Worship for Jr. High Retreat

February 26th, 2018

This past weekend I had the privilege of being asked to lead worship for a retreat weekend for our church’s Junior High ministry (“The Vibe”) at a campground/retreat centre in Muskoka.

Now I’m turning 60 in a month, and to think that these kids (and their leaders) would want ME to lead worship was a honour.  I had a fantastic time, and would gladly do it again, but being around nearly 60 kids from Grade 8 to 10, and “Jr. Leaders” up to Grade 12, definitely taught me a few things over the 48 hours I was with them.

Here is my list, in no particular order:

  1. I really love these kids!
  2. They have way more energy than I.
  3. Jr. High’s can, and will, sing worship songs loud and heartfelt!
  4. I cannot climb a rock climbing wall if my life depended on it!  In fact, I couldn’t even hang there!!
  5. Everything needs to be explained at least three times.
  6. Everything needs to be explained.
  7. All explanations need to be repeated.
  8. You must repeat your explanations.
  9. Hygiene is not high on the priority list for most Jr. High’s.
  10. They have way more energy than I do!
  11. Always bring a pillow and towel.
  12. Buffets are not a safe place for kids who like to lick spoons and put them back in the serving bowls.
  13. Chefs can get quite angry when they lick the spoon.
  14. Chefs aren’t really all that pleased when they stick their finger in the fruit spread bowl either, two meals later.
  15. I can still yell “Quiet!” louder than the best of them.
  16. Tylenol is my friend.
  17. Cardboard, duct tape, garbage bags and rope don’t generally make good sleds.  But with the right design they will win you a prize.
  18. Jr. Highs like their marshmallows burnt to a crisp over the open fire, or stuck to the floor with spaghetti sticking out (don’t ask!), not golden brown.
  19. They have way more energy than I do, and they can stay up way later than I do.
  20. They sometimes have problems finding their rooms at night.
  21. You must repeat any explanations at least three times.
  22. Even the smallest of them have feet that are big enough to knock over a guitar in an area of the room where they’ve been told is out of bounds.
  23. You must repeat any explanations at least three, or more, times.
  24. You must never leave a microphone on in a room unattended by adults, even for a moment.
  25. Coats are optional when outdoors in winter.
  26. You must check the doors and lights in your van after the kids exit it.
  27. You must carry jumper cables at all times.
  28. You cannot jumpstart another car from a Ford Transit (the batteries are buried in a place only a fully qualified mechanic can get to).
  29. You must have friends that will drive 15 minutes back, to give you a jump start when the campground staff can’t, due to insurance liability reasons.
  30. McDonalds on Hwy 48 near Beaverton Ontario is the busiest McD’s on the planet on a Friday night during retreat season.
  31. Kids can do things that no adult can ever do — like walk up to, and touch the nose of a wild deer.  (Still can’t believe that one!)
  32. A lot of these kids have a faith that would put a lot of adults to shame.
  33. Retreats are wonderful events in the lives of these kids (and me!).
  34. I love these kids!!
